Hi Caro, I am playing catch up a bit (a lot). Have all the Zoom calls happened now or are there future dates? I'm really enjoying all the content, thank you
Hi Nelly, so sorry for the delay answering! We have a Zoom tonight (18th March) at 6pm but I'm thinking of organising monthly drop-in Zoom sessions for the membership for those who weren't able to do the proposal at the same time. Would that be of interest?
Hi Caro... I just spotted this re-reading through the sessions. I haven't been able to attend the evening Zoom sessions live either due to teaching commitments that clashed, and would LOVE it if you were to organise monthly drop-in Zoom sessions. I expect they would be very popular!
Thank you for this, I enjoyed greatly and Wendy's advice on research was really helpful - as well as hearing where she started from - imposter syndrome gets us all! I was wondering about the writing sample, what are your thoughts on the sample being a selection of chapters from the book - or is that a no-no? I get paralysed by picking just one and leaving out a passage that might be better!
Hi Nicola, so happy this has been useful! Always a tough one when choosing extracts. While you absolutely can select a sample of several chapters to showcase the breadth, I would caution over doing it too much. I think a lot of agents/editors will want to see how well a writer can hold an argument over a long extract so maybe one chunky extract and a few shorter ones? You don't want to give the impression it is too fragmented (unless that's the aim!).
Hahaha well if you have had permission and it wasn't costly, you're absolutely fine. It's those who quote The Beatles thinking it'll be £50 that we worry about.
The author is usually the one who has to clear all permissions, though a publisher may help in finding rights holders if you're stuck (copyright pages of any piece of art usually does the job).
Each publisher has a different house style on bibliography so just use the Harvard one for ease and it can be easily converted.

Good point. Yes that makes perfect sense! Thanks for getting back to me
As usual, all so helpful and thank you to Wendy for great research advice. Thought provoking as ever.
Couldn't agree more!!
You are very welcome, I'm glad it was useful!
